The HeForShe movement

28 Sep 2018

Standard Bank has joined forces with the United Nations (UN) Women HeForShe movement, which invites men and women to stand in solidarity for gender equality, because together we are more powerful. Gender equity is a fundamental human right, and Standard Bank Group has signed up to help change the narrative and invite everyone to come together as one to create a gender-equal world.

On behalf of Standard Bank Group, Chief Executive Sim Tshabalala, has become 1 of 10 global Thematic Champions in the HeForShe movement. Sim will stand alongside other visionary world leaders such as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau; Bruce Cleaver, CEO of De Beers Group; and Dr Jim Yong Kim, President of the World Bank Group.

The HeForShe movement invites men to stand side by side with women to create a bold, visible force for gender equality.

Sim Tshabalala says, “Achieving gender equity is a moral duty, a business imperative, and just plain common sense. Women embody half the world’s talent, skill and energy – and more than half of its purchasing power. So every sensible business leader must be committed to achieving gender equity in their company and to contributing to gender equity in the societies in which we operate.”

To ensure tangible change, Standard Bank Group has committed to making to change from within. “By 2021, we will increase the representation of women in executive positions in Standard Bank South Africa from 35% to 40%, and across the Group from 32% to 40% by 2023.  In addition to this, we will increase the representation of women on the SBG Board from the current 22% to 33% by 2021, and increase the representation of women CEs (country and/or regional) in the Africa Regions from 10% (current) to 20% by 2021.”

As HeForShe explains “It has become clear that a strategic shift needs to occur that brings men and boys standing side by side with women and girls to break through the roadblocks that prevent women and girls from achieving their full potential and contributing this potential to our global community. Gender equality is a fundamental human right – all people deserve to be treated equally, regardless of their gender.”

Join us as we set gender equity in motion. It’s up to everyone.
