Standard Bank Group considers it a business imperative to support and help uplift the communities in which it operates. Its approach to corporate social responsibility (CSR) includes involving employees of the group in activities.
As a member of Standard Bank Group, the people of Standard Bank in Mauritius proactively identify opportunities arising from key social needs when formulating our corporate social investment programmes, rather than just react to requests from charitable causes.
Standard Bank recognizes that to ensure sustainability, we need to look beyond the business itself towards the broader environment and at uplifting the community through its Corporate and Social Responsibility programme. In order to align with Group CSR strategy as well as the Mauritian reality, the bank has decided to intervene in the following areas: Education, Environment and Sports.
The bank’s CSR Committee has identified the main initiatives that will be implemented for 2012.
Education
Scholarships
Ten scholarships will be granted to deserving and needy students who want to pursue an undergraduate degree at the University of Mauritius. The scholarship will cover all tuition expenses during the whole duration of the degree as well as the payment of a monthly stipend allowance.
Centre pour L'Education et le Progrès des Enfants Handicapés (CEPEH)
CEPEH is a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) found in Argy which caters for the education of children with special needs. The NGO has limited space and they are not able to accommodate more students. The bank has agreed to upgrade the existing building.
Sports
Fondation Pour La Formation au Football
The project consists of enabling children from a distinct underprivileged area to have access to football training. The project is being run by the ‘Fondation pour la Formation au Football’ (FFF). This NGO aims to implement 70 ‘Ecoles de Foot’ around the island. The Bank proposes to sponsor the ‘Ecole de Foot’ of Camp Levieux.
Environment
Mauritius Wildlife Foundation (MWF)
The bank has decided to associate with the MWF, the main NGO which works in the field of environment in Mauritius. The bank will fund the Kestrel project which aims at the conservation of the Mauritius Kestrel.
Staff Engagement
Staff engagement is an inherent part of our CSR strategy. We want our staff to be at the centre of the CSR drive and make a bigger impact on the people and communities.
